This was the land he fought for. This was freedom. This is what was at stake.

Even in the fight for justice, so many who deserved to see the end would die, their names forgotten.

"God is a God of second chances. And I have a feeling that your story and your brother’s story -- it isn’t over."

He couldn’t even help his relationship with his own brother. What made him think he could do any good helping Jeremy when he couldn't even help himself?

The air around him was thick with smoke, making the entire world look a colorless, ashen grey. The rain had stopped for now, but the mud clung to everything. Sometimes Jess wondered if even nature was on the side of the Japanese.

The rain and thunder overhead drowned out his sobs as he sat there. His knees drawn up to his chest and his head between them, more alone than he’d ever been before. 

 God hadn’t taken everything. God was working, even in the hurt and the pain.
