Hi all! How are you doing this Friday? It's the first Friday in June!! So exciting!! :D And June is the beginning of summer. And I LOVE summer!
Today I have a different kind of post. I've actually had the idea for a while, but it seemed that every week I went to post it, I had a different post already planned. So y'all get it today! ;) Without further ado. . .a letter to autocorrect!
Dear Autocorrect,
I have a feeling this short note may be brutal, so I want to make sure that I state right off that I know your intentions are good. Please, keep this in mind as you go though the rest of the letter.
First off, I want to ask you why you insist on thinking that you are better at spelling than I am? Not to say there aren't times I misspell a word, but most of the words you insist are wrong are actually right. (And I also have spell-check to help me with the spelling thing.) No, I'm not trying to say Eire, I am trying to say Eira. And please stop changing Andi to And I.
And when I'm writing, please do not persist in changing every foreign word or foreign sounding name to something that is not even remotely similar. I KNOW WHAT I'M DOING! Just because it may not be in English doesn't mean you have to change it. You don't need to understand everything I'm doing. I don't need you to be reading over my shoulder, criticizing every word I write. That's what my sisters are for. (But they also say nice things, too. Unlike you.)
You also tend to distract me from what I'm trying to write since you are forever changing my words. And let me assure you, that is something you don't want. Bad things happen to those who interrupt my writing.
One last thing and I promise I will do my best to stop. I do not appreciate you trying to change the tenses. Yes, it is supposed to be has, not have, and doesn't is not supposed to be don't. Also, trust me, "all that" is not supposed to be changed to "that entire".(How is that even similar?)
Okay,I will stop for now. Please, let it also be noted that I would appreciate it if you would keep your intrusions into my life at a minimum.
Sincerely,
A writer who has to put up with you.
P.S Every one and everyone mean two very different things. Please stop trying to convince me they are the same.
So tell me. *sits back and folds hands* Have you had any run-ins with autocorrect? If so, what were your impressions after the first encounter? If you appreciate this technological feature, please let me know! Maybe I can learn how to enjoy it, if only a little. ;)
Have a wonderful weekend!
Try creating your own name ideas (if I remember correctly, Shambler isn't a name that most computers like)! Spell check has told me that my own name is incorrect, my last name is incorrect, and even licorice is spelled incorrectly. Trust me, I've looked it up various times.
ReplyDeleteI think that you can disable both spell check and autocorrect. You might want to research that! :)
I loved this post!
Love,
Indi
Oh, yeah, creating your own name ideas would be so hard with autocorrect! And yes, the way I spell my name autocorrect always says is wrong as well. ;)
DeleteWow, licorice?! That's interesting!
I've figured out how to disable spellcheck. . .still have to figure out autocorrect!
Thanks! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!!
Haha, this was hilarious, Jesseca! But YES, I can so relate ;) I remember once when I was trying to type out my Latin homework, and autocorrect kept changing some of the words to English and by the time I had finished, there was a jumble of red underlines, English, and Latin words that made no sense whatsoever :P My autocorrect also has some sort of Canadian/British spelling thing on it, so when I spell grey with an 'a', it automatically changes it to fray. Look, watch: fray fray fray fray *sigh* this is hopeless. OKAY, so not utterly hopeless. I found out a couple years ago that if you attach a jumble of letters to the word and then put a space between the word you want and then the other letters, it will stay that way. Like this: gray (hello!) :P
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, that's just my experience with it ;) I think for 60-70% of the time, autocorrect is helpful. The rest of the time...wellllll......yeah :P
I had fun writing it. ;) YES!!! I's so annoying! But at least you figured out a way round it!! :)
DeleteYeah, it can be helpful sometimes!! It's just a nuisance too much of the time for my liking. ;)
I'm so glad you wrote Autocorrect! This letter needed to be written. Hopefully s/he listened.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this fun letter!
It did need to be written. ;) I hope it listens. . .
DeleteAnd you're welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed!
Lol, this is awesome Jesseca!! Auto-correct definitely needs a good shaking. ;D
ReplyDeleteHaha, thanks, Hannah!! Yes, we all need to get together and shake it!! Writers unite against autocorrect!!
DeleteThis is so great. ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Autocorrect but I'm pretty sure I meant to name my character Cadria despite the fact you insist her name is cardiac.
The struggle is real.
So glad you enjoyed, Hannah!!
DeleteOh, wow! Yeah, It's those times that I reallllyyyy hate autocorrect! We need to outlaw it, somehow. ;)
Cadria is such a beautiful name, by the way! :)
Thank you!
DeleteThis was really, really funny. The writer menace auto-correct! Most of my problems tend to be on my tablet, my laptop is now trained to ignore my switches between Russian, Swedish and English (it won't even try to correct my Russian, since it's an entirely different alphabet. B-) ), and for the most part no longer corrects me on anything else. The tablet is a different story, it's time to train that guy into obeying me. ;) At least the tablet gives good suggestions when I'm writing in Russian.
ReplyDeleteLove this post! Very funny and well done! :D
Glad to see my attempt at humor turned out well. B-)
DeleteYES, TABLETS ARE THE WORSE!!! Glad it helps with Russian, at least. ;) for the most part our PC works pretty good (although Word Doc still doesn't like me sometimes.) But the laptop and the tablet, especially the tablet, still need help. ;P
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!!
Oh, Jesseca, you're a genius!!! :D You basically summed up every thought-war I've ever had with autocorrect...which is a lot. :P
ReplyDeleteEvery one and everyone -- been there! My most frequent arguments with autocorrect are Carnathan vs. carnation. (Like, no. It's a name!!) And it tries to tell me that Erin is incorrect... Grrrr.
Okay, I'm off to battled autocorrect! (Writing. I'm writing. ;))
*nods* Thank you. I always knew I was. ;)
DeleteYES! Autocorrect wars are horrid. And no one else seems to understand! Glad us writers can "get" each other. :)
Haha, what does David think about being called a flower? B-) Really? Erin? It tells me Erich is wrong. . .no idea why. :P
Oh, yay!! Yes, write. Write a lot. :)
So true!! Autocorrect is the worst. I don't have it on my computer, of course, but I have enough trouble typing words on my phone without autocorrect changing everything around. xD
ReplyDelete~Lydia~ <3
Isn't it?! Yeah, mobile devices are so bad! And I still haven't figured out how to disable it on them!
DeleteMy mom has sent some funny texts because of autocorrect. :P
ReplyDeleteMine too!! And then she reads them to us later and she's like "wait. . .what was I trying to say?" ;)
DeleteBrilliant post! Definitely smiled through the entire letter :D I always have issues with auto-correct and a number of my friends, myself included, have nicknames based on an "auto-correct" fail :P
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lauren!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Oh, that's s funny, but a great way to get nicknames!!! ;)
DeleteSometimes it comes up with the weirdest things. . . :)
This is perfect! I always have so many issues with auto-correct... aghh!!
ReplyDeleteYES!!! I'm not alone! Apparently there are a lot more people who struggle with autocorrect then I thought! We all need to start a war against it... ;)
Delete*shakes fist* darn you, auto correct! How dare you intrude, not only on MY life, but on the lives of other poor innocent writers? SHAME ON YOU. SHAME.
ReplyDeleteYES! It intrudes on all of our lives! shakes head* We need to figure out how to outsmart it. . . ;)
DeleteHaha, yes autocorrect. (That can be one word, right? It's telling me that it needs a hyphen, or needs be two separate words.. :O What a prime example of its intrusiveness!) Anyway, that's a brilliant idea to write a letter to autocorrect. :)
ReplyDeleteI had that problem to! I decided it could just be one word. That's how I've always seen it. So who cares what you think, autocorrect ! YOU'RE ONE WORD!! xD
DeleteThanks! I'm glad you enjoyed! :)
I had a lot of fun reading this, Jesseca! :) Autocorrect can be soooo annoying sometimes. There has been a couple times where I had to fight with it a little because it thought I was spelling something wrong when really I wasn't. ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed it, Rebekah! Yes, it is annoying. I normally try to find a way to use another word. ;P
DeleteHaha! Ah, autocorrect, the pain you inflict. ;) I actually haven't had much of a run-in with autocorrect while writing in a Word document, but I'm actually kinda thankful to have it on my texting, because I AIM to spell a word right with my fingers, but often it is very wrong. ;) And autocorrect fixes the words I'm trying to say properly - *most of the time*.
ReplyDelete-Micaiah-
Yeah, it can be handy to have in texting! My problem is so many of my friends have names that are uniquely or differently spelled, and it wants to change them. ;P
DeleteThanks for commenting, Micaiah!! :D
